SEC Losing Grip?

The Southeastern Conference has dominated Division 1 college football over the past seven years. People have said that it is the closet thing to the NFL in college football. A team from the SEC has won the national title starting with the Florida Gators back in 2007, to Alabama being the last team in the 2012-2013 season.

The past two years however have changed in terms of conferences appearing in the title game. In the 2014 national title game, Florida State of the ACC took on the Auburn Tigers of the SEC. The Tigers would end up losing a nail biter. The Seminoles would be the first team since Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns back in the 2005-2006 season to win a the national title.

The SEC wouldn't even make an appearance in the national title game the following year. With Ohio State upsetting the Crimson Tide in the first round of the brand-new college football playoff. A team from the PAC-12 and a team from the Big Ten Conference would be the first to break up the SEC reign of national title appearances.

National Signing Day was yesterday and it may have been foreshadowing for what is to come of the might SEC.  After seven SEC teams ranked in the top 10 in recruiting classes last year, only four teams made it in the top 10. Texas, USC, UCLA, Clemson, Ohio State and Florida State all finished in the top 10. Alabama did end up finishing in the top spot, however some would argue that USC deserves that title.

Texas A&M would be the only other team in the top 15. It may be a tad bit early to say that the SEC might be on a down slope. The 2015 season will tell us all we need to know. Some would argue that Alabama is the best team in the nation and I couldn't agree more. You can tell how fed up other college programs are with the SEC's dominance. A little too late I'd say. If I were to guess the next powerhouse conference in college football that could overthrow the SEC. I'd probably look to the west coast, at the PAC-12 as the "best chance" conference.

USC and UCLA had an amazing winter and I would look for them along with the national championship runner-up Oregon to follow as usual. Stanford and Washington should go right along with them.
