Watt for MVP

2015 was an up and down season for the NFL players and the league itself. With the Ray Rice controversy and many other domestic cases along with "deflate gate", it's been quite the year. It's been quite the up and down season for some, but for one NFL player it's been nothing but up. His name is J.J. Watt and he is the baddest man on any given Sunday.

J.J. Watt was the most dominating figure in professional football this season. The Houston Texans defensive end is already a lock for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Watt finished the season with mind blowing stats. These stats are numbers that you'll probably never see from someone in a single season ever again. Sacks aren't a stat that deserves much attention anymore when teams are dropping back and passing so much. Sacks are still a stat that people enjoy. Nobody hates seeing a massive human being laying the wood on the all herald quarterback.

Nobody in the league is better at getting to the quarterback than Watt. Watt finished the 2014 season with 20.5 sacks. Since his rookie year Watt has brought the quarterback down 57 times. He became just the 5th player in NFL history to record over 50 sacks in 4 seasons. The other four players are future Hall of Famers or already in the HOF.

If only sacks were the main topic of Watt's MVP candidacy. He was not only a sack machine but also pretty good at taking the ball away from his opponent. Watt forced four fumbles, while also recovering five more and scoring on one. He gets the nickname "Swatt" because it's hard for a quarterback to get the pass over him. He finished the season with 10 passes deflected. He has deflected 37 total passes in his career. There are many defensive backs who don't even have that much throughout their career.

He has a game that hasn't been seen since the likes of Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor. The man has hands and a nose for the end-zone. Watt finished with one interception for an 80 yard touchdown. If that's not amazing then maybe his three receiving touchdowns are. For the first time in his career Watt took his offensive talents to another level by crossing the goal line three times for scores.

The legend that is J.J. Watt finished with the same amount of total touchdowns as All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy, with five. That is only one less than All-Pro wideout AJ Green finished with (6). He totaled 32 points for the Texans. Two of those points came from a safety in the last game of the season against Jacksonville.

There has only been one other defensive player in the history of the NFL that has won the league MVP. Lawrence Taylor won the MVP in 1986 for the New York Giants. Nobody has ever been feared around the league like LT, but now that time has changed. LT won the award for getting 20.5 sacks. Watt had the same stat in 2014, but Watt had all those other statistics that LT didn't have. LT was on a better team (1986 New York Giants 14-2, Super Bowl Champions). Watt's team didn't end up making the playoffs but he led them to a 9-7 record after quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick broke his leg in week 15.

There have been many dominating figures in the NFL this year. Aaron Rodgers hasn't thrown an interception at home since 2012. He led the Packers to an undefeated season at home. Andrew Luck was a total beast for the Colts and DeMarco Murray was a huge reason for the Dallas Cowboys success. Murray and Luck broke many team records but were either of these three players performances better than Watt's? Like Stephen A. Smith would say, No Way, No How.
